AI Policy — TomMarshall.uk
The case for a human voice.
There's something a piece of AI-generated audio will never fully replicate: The instinct, the spontaneity, the warmth of a human performance. The tiny imperfections that make a voice feel real. The creative decisions made in the moment that turn a good read into a great one.
AI voices are improving rapidly. But they're improving at sounding like humans, not at being human. And for now, that difference still matters enormously to the brands, producers and creators who care about the quality of their audio.
That's why I remain committed to delivering genuine human voice performance on every project I take on.
What I use AI for
Like most modern audio professionals, I use AI-assisted tools in my workflow, primarily for audio cleanup, noise reduction and restoration where necessary. These are production tools, no different in principle to the countless AI-powered plugins now standard across the industry. They improve the quality of the final delivered audio without altering the performance itself.
What I will never do
I will never knowingly use AI to generate, replace or simulate my voice, or any other voice, in place of a genuine recorded performance.
Voice cloning — my absolute position
I do not grant permission, under any circumstances, for my voice to be cloned, synthesised, replicated or used to train any AI model or voice synthesis system. This applies to any recordings I have delivered commercially, personally or otherwise, without exception.
Any use of my voice for AI training or synthesis purposes without my explicit written consent is a violation of my rights and will be treated accordingly.
A note to clients
If you're considering AI-generated audio for your project, I'd encourage you to listen carefully to what you're comparing. A human performance brings something to a project that goes beyond the words and that something is often exactly what makes people stop, listen and respond.
If you'd like to talk about what genuine human audio production can do for your project, I'm always happy to have that conversation.
